About Base64 image encoding

A Base64 data URI embeds image bytes inside text. The tool encodes a selected image into a data URI and CSS value, or decodes a pasted data URI or raw Base64 into a preview and PNG download.

How to use Image to Base64 Converter

  1. 1Choose Image to Base64 to select an image and generate a data URI plus a CSS background value.
  2. 2Copy the generated value, or switch to Base64 to Image and paste a Base64 string or data URI.
  3. 3Preview a valid decoded image and download it as a PNG file.

Frequently asked questions

Which image files can be encoded?
This tool accepts image files your browser can decode. The file never leaves your device, so there is no upload limit — the only ceiling is what your browser can hold in memory.
What is the difference between raw Base64 and a data URI?
Raw Base64 contains only the encoded bytes. A data URI also includes the media type and encoding prefix, such as data:image/png;base64, so it can be used directly in HTML or CSS.
Does Base64 make an image smaller?
No. Base64 usually increases the byte count compared with the binary image. It is useful for embedding small assets, not for compression.
